Encapsulated O-rings

FEP, PFA or PTFE Encapsulated O-rings consist of a Viton® (FKM) or Silicone (VMQ) rubber core with an fluoroplastic-encapsulation. The elastomeric core offers great resilience while the fluoroplastic encapsulation protects the core from chemical and thermal attack. Encapsulated rings are a great cost effective alternative to FFKM O-rings.

Suitable for

  • Static and light dynamic applications.
  • Applications that require a high level of chemical resistance.

Not suitable for

  • Small cross sections >1.5mm.
  • Applications where a low closing force is available.

Advantages

  1. High chemical resistance
  2. High temperature range
  3. Low friction
  4. No stick slip effect in dynamic applications
  5. Can be used as retrofit in standard O-ring grooves

How do Encapsulated O-Rings work?

Encapsulated O-rings work the same as regular O-rings. An O-ring is an elastic part placed between two parts and then squeezed to fill up the gap between the two parts. When placed under pressure, the ring is forced to “flow” within the groove toward the clearance gap. As the ring flows against the gap, it produces zero clearance and prevents the sealed substance from escaping. The difference between a regular O-ring and a Encapsulated ring is the fact that the encapsulation brings improved chemical resistance, but the ‘compression set’ or memory of the seal is lower.

Encapsulated O-ring types

FEP ENCAPSULATED SILICONE (VMQ)

The most commonly used encapsulated seal type. The silicone core provides resiliency, while the FEP encapsulation offers chemical protection and great thermal resistance.

Advantages

  • High chemical resistance
  • Broad temperature range
  • No stick slip effect

PFA ENCAPSULATED SILICONE (VMQ)

The silicone core provides resiliency, while the PFA encapsulation offers chemical protection and great thermal resistance.

Advantages

  • High chemical resistance
  • Broad temperature range
  • Improved heat resistance
  • Low gas permeation

FEP ENCAPSULATED SILICONE (VMQ) HOLLOW CORE

The hollow core of this encapsulated seal type allows successful sealing with less compression force. Excellent for use in low pressure applications and applications where low sealing force is available.

Advantages

  • High chemical resistance
  • Broad temperature range
  • No stick slip effect
  • Low closing force

PTFE ENCAPSULATED FKM

The PTFE encapsulated FKM O-ring has superior chemical properties, very low permeability and low friction coefficient. The PTFE encapsulations offers longer lifetime in comparison to FEP/PFA

Advantages

  • High chemical resistance
  • Broad temperature range
  • No stick slip effect
  • Improved friction coefficient
