Reduction of oil leakage by 35%

1. THE CHALLENGE

Can you reduce the current oil leakage by improving an existing rod seal?

One of our customers had a sealing issue with an existing rod seal. Reason for failure was unknown but oil leakage was considered to be too high.

2. THE PROCESS

How did we reduce the oil leakage?

Together with the customers engineering team we gathered all available and needed information in order to understand the goal. In order to improve existing rod seal we collected samples for investigation. The specific rod seal was a double-acting PTFE rod sealing ring and an O-ring. As we could not change the design we carefully analyzed the involved materials. Based on the results we discovered that we could optimize used compounds. We changed the filler inside the PTFE material and changed the FKM O-ring compound into a peroxide cured compound with an increased resistance against high temperatures. Last but not least we improved the surface finish of the PTFE rod sealing. We presented the results to our client and after a first laboratory test a significant improvement was found. The new combination was tested in the field and a reduction of 35% of oil leakage was achieved.

3. THE PRODUCT

The Result

  • Reduction of oil leakage by 35% compared to the former rod seal.
  • No cost increase due to our optimized and automatic injection moulding production process.
  • A satisfied customer!
