X-Rings | Quad-Rings®
X-rings, or Quad rings®, are an alternative for O‐rings. X-rings have four lips and therefore they have at least four sealing surfaces. The benefits are: high stability, space for lubricants between the sealing lips (both favorable with dynamic applications) and a parting line that is not on a sealing surface. Quad rings have a high sealing efficiency even in low pressure applications.
Suitable for
- Low pressure static/light dynamic applications.
- Applications where low closing force is required.
- Applications where the sealing solution is subjected to torsion during assembly/operation.
Not suitable for
- High pressure applications.
- High speed dynamic applications.
Advantages
- Higher sealing capacity in comparison to O-rings
- Stable sealing solution with high resistance to rolling in dynamic applications
- High resistance to spiral failure
- The four lips on a X-ring create a groove for lubrication. This reduces friction in dynamic applications.
- Less compression force is required due to the multi-lobed design. Therefor less squeeze is required, reducing friction and wear.
How do X-Rings work?
An X-ring is an elastic part placed between two parts and then squeezed to fill up the gap between the two parts. An X-ring has at least four sealing surfaces. When an X- ring is installed, the X-ring is slightly compressed to seal at low pressures. When an X- ring is pressurised, the X-ring is forced to “flow” within the groove toward the clearance gap. The small area between the sealing surfaces can be filled with lubricant to reduce friction and increase lifetime in dynamic applications.

Common X-Ring types
Type Nitrile (NBR)
NBR X-Rings have good resistance to minerla oils, greases and water up to 100 °C. NBR is not compatible with most solvents, strong acids, fuels with high aromatic content and ozone/weathering.
Type EPDM
EPDM X-Rings have good resistance to hot water, hydraulic fluids, silicone oils and silicone greases. EPDM is not compatible with mineral oils, mineral greases and hydrocarbons.
Type Viton® FKM
FKM X-Rings have excellent resistance to most chemicals, mineral oils, greases, fuels, ozone and aromatic hydrocarbons. FKM is not compatible with organic acids that have low molecular weight and glycol based brake fluids.

Alternatives for square rings
Better groove stability
D-rings
D-rings are an alternative for X-rings. A D-ring has the stability advantages an X-ring and the same sealing characteristics as an O-ring.
